Our tour begins with a two night stay at Hotel Veraneio Hampel in Sao Francisco de Paula. Following a late afternoon flight to Curitiba, where we'll stay one night at a hotel to be determined in Sao Jose dos Pinhas south of the city. After a day of birding the Serra da Graciosa, we spend one night at the Santuario Nhundiaquara, a very pleasant lodge near Morretes. We then transfer to Volta Velha for a two night stay at Pousada Volta Velha before returning to Sao Jose dos Pinhas for one more night. From there we drive north to Intervales Lodge State Park, where we stay 3 nights at Fazenda Intervales. Then we drive north to the resort town of Ubatuba, where we spend 2 nights at the Hotel Solar das Aguas Cantantes, the usual place where birding groups stay because its quiet and closer to the prime birding areas. From Ubatuba we transfer to Itatiaia National Park, where we spend our last 3 nights at the superb Hotel do Ype inside the park.
HOTEL VERANEIO HAMPEL
Hotel Veraneio Hampel is a very comfortable hotel located near Sao Francisco de Paula in Rio Grande do Sul State of southern Brazil. The hotel owns a private forest reserve and maintains several hummingbird feeders outside the veranda that offer excellent birding on the premises. The hotel features a restaurant that serves fine regional cuisine buffet-style. There is a cable-TV room, small library, and a museum that portrays the history of the area. Rooms are heated and feature double beds with private bath. Most have verandas overlooking the gardens.

SANTUARIO NHUNDIAQUARA
Santuario Nhundiaquara is a 400 hectare ecological park and lodge in Porto de Cima, a small village adjacent to Morretes in the lowlands below Serra da Graciosa. It features full bar and restaurant, swimming pool, and internet access. The restaurant serves seafood, barbecue, salads, and fruits. Rooms are heated and have double or twin beds, private bath with shower only, and a private balcony. TOP
POUSADA VOLTA VELHA
Pousada Volta Velha is located in the village of Itapoa near Volta Velha Reserve. Generally speaking, only tour groups can book rooms at the pousada. Individuals generally cannot. The pousada is a bed-and-breakfast that offers basic but comfortable accommodations. Rooms feature double beds and private bath. Breakfast is served at the pousada. We eat our other meals at restaurants in town. TOP
FAZENDA INTERVALES LODGE
Fazenda Intervales Lodge is situated on the higher section of Intervales State Park. The fazenda was formerly a farm until it was converted into a state park. It provides basic accommodations in 4 separate buildings. It provides private rooms with private bath for visitors to the park. Meals are served buffet style by an independent contractor. TOP
HOTEL SOLAR DAS AGUAS CANTANTES
Hotel Solar das Aguas Cantantes is located 12 miles south of central Ubatuba about a block from the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel is built in the Portuguese colonial style and offers quiet and comfort. The hotel restaurant has won numerous awards for the quality of its food. Specialties include seafood and local cuisine. There are 20 comfortable apartments of varying sizes that feature double or twin beds, TV, air conditioning, and small refrigerator. All rooms face onto the garden in the inner courtyard.
