Birding along the dirt road that descends down into the Sarapiqui River canyon can be extremely productive. After parking a few hundred meters down the road, one can walkdown to the bridge and see a good variety of birds in the forests along the road. The area around the bridge is a great place to see Torrent Tyrannulet as well as tanagers and many other species. A narrow trail through the forest along the river is an excellent place to find Scale-crested Pygmy-Tyrant. Occasionally Golden-browed Chlorophonia can be found in the forest edge along the road.
A few miles further southwest on Highway 9 is the town of Cinchona, where the Miradores Restaurant offers spectacular views of the Lower La Paz Waterfall. Several hummingbird feeders near the balcony afford terrific close-up views of numerous hummingbird species including the near endemic Coppery-headed Emerald.
