Huashapamba Forest Reserve protects remnant cloud forests along the continental divide at elevations between 9,200 and 10,400 ft. Trees are covered by mosses, lichens, bromeliads, and small orchids. Dense undergrowth helps protect native wildlife and birds from poachers but can also make birding difficult. The area is especially good for viewing Golden-plumed Parakeets and the endangered Red-faced Parrot. It's also an excellent place for seeing antpittas if one can arrive by dawn.
