ABOUT THE BIRDING

The main birding areas around La Vega are the Jardin Encantado, Refugio de Laguna del Tabacal (Tabacal Lagoon Park), and trails through shade coffee plantations. Primary target species are the endemic Apical Flycatcher and Velvet-fronted Euphonia, most easily found in dry habitat along the main highway below La Vega where many coffee plantations are located. The same habitat is a good place to look for Spectacled Parrotlet, Red-billed Scythebill, and Slate-headed Tody-Flycatcher. The track into Tabacal Lagoon Park is home to Rosy Thrush-Tanager, Short-tailed Emerald, Gray-throated Warbler, and Black-headed Brush-Finch. The park is surrounded by humid to dry forest and scrub. The main trail climbs steeply 200 meters to a viewpoint. Beyond the viewpoint (going counter-clockwise) is scrub habitat where Rosy Thrush-Tanager, Bar-crested Antshrike, Red-billed Scythebill, Blue-lored Antbird, Dusky Antbird, and White-bellied Antbird, Rufous-naped Greenlet, and Plain-colored Tanager are often seen. Other birds of interest in the area include Ash-browed Spinetail, Gray-throated Warbler, and Scrub Tanager.
