ABOUT THE BIRDING
Orog Lake is a saline lake in the foothills of the Gobi Altai Mountains at the base of Ikh Bogd Mountain. It's an important stopover for migratory waterfowl as well as an important breeding area. The desert bush near the lake is the best place to find the much sought after Mongolian Ground Jay. Reedbeds near the lake are home to Water Rails, Baillon's Crakes, and Black-banded Crakes. The desert between Ikh Bogd and Orog Lake is the eastern-most extent of the range for Savi's Warbler< other species are present as well, including Pallas's Sandgrouse, Mongolian Lark, Bearded Reedling, Asian Desert Warbler, and Desert Wheatear.
LOCATION OF SITE
Orog Lake is located near the foothills of the Gobi Altai Mountains at the base of Ikh Bogd Mountain southwest of Ulaanbaatar. It's 818km from Ulaanbaatar and takes 12 hours of non-stop driving to reach the lake.
